The Background

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park was initiated by the Dubai Government, with a total planned capacity of 5 GW. This 900 MW PV park, with a total area of 10.17 square kilometers, officially broke ground in July 2020 as the fifth phase of the park's construction. When completed, the project will reduce Dubai’s dependence on imported natural gas and thus accelerate its energy transformation.

The Challenges

While Dubai is geomorphologically suitable for utility-scale PV plants, its frequent sandstorms and temperatures exceeding 50 °C pose a significant challenge. Meanwhile, the project's feed-in tariff of 1.69 US cents/kWh also hit a record low. This placed demanding requirements on every aspect of the project, including design, equipment selection, construction, and subsequent O&M.

The Solution
6.25 MW Block + MV Solution for a Lower LCOE
This project adopts a 6.25 MW block design, requiring fewer inverters and transformers to cut initial investment. Sungrow’s 6.25 MW and 3.125 MW MV turnkey solutions integrate the inverter and MV Station, simplifying transport, installation, and reducing costs. With commissioning completed before delivery, on-site debugging is minimized, while the inverter’s reactive power support removes the need for an SVG, further lowering LCOE.
Bifacial PV Modules + Tracking System for Higher Yields
With a feed-in tariff of just 1.69 US cents/kWh—a record low at the time—the project leverages abundant sunlight and sand’s high reflectivity by using bifacial PV modules and a single-axis tracking system to lower LCOE and boost revenue. JinkoSolar Swan bifacial modules with Cheetah cell technology and DuPont™ Tedlar® backsheets deliver up to 25% rear-side gain, while Nextracker’s NX Horizon™ further improves DC-side output by 1.02%–1.67%, enhancing overall generation and ROI.
Efficient Heat Dissipation for Guaranteed Power Output in the Desert
The 900 MW Maktoum PV plant in Dubai faces extreme desert conditions with sandstorms and temperatures above 50 °C (122 °F), demanding exceptional inverter reliability. Using bifacial modules with single-axis trackers further increases heat dissipation requirements. Sungrow’s central inverter, with a divided-cavity design and fully sealed IP65-rated electronic chamber, employs high-efficiency heat exchangers for cooling, enabling long-term full-load operation in harsh environments and ensuring stable revenue generation.

The Impacts

As a landmark project representing the most advanced PV technology in the UAE, the fifth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is also the largest PV plant in Dubai to date. The plant provides 2.268 billion kWh of clean power annually, enough to power 270,000 homes and reduce 1.18 million tons of carbon emissions. This project has become a cornerstone of the green energy supply for Dubai's residents, playing a significant role in advancing the region's energy transition and achieving the goals of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.
