Hurghada, Egypt – In a strategic move for Egypt's industrial energy transition, Sungrow, the globally leading PV inverter and energy storage system provider, has successfully commissioned a 1.4 MWp solar power system at the Esh El Mallaha petroleum plant in Hurghada, Egypt. Delivered in collaboration with authorized distributor ACO and EPC partner Korra Energi, marking a significant step in integrating renewable energy into oil and gas operations in the region.

Onsite Solar Adoption for Diesel Displacement in Industrial Operations

Oil and gas facilities across the Middle East and North Africa have historically depended on diesel-based generation to supply onsite electricity, particularly in remote and high-energy-demand operations. In recent years, distributed renewable energy systems have been increasingly deployed to complement or partially replace diesel consumption as operators seek more stable and efficient energy solutions.

At the Esh El Mallaha facility, the solar installation is expected to generate approximately 125 MWh of electricity annually, offsetting diesel use and avoiding about 125 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year. Beyond emissions reduction, the system reduces reliance on fuel logistics and improves operational predictability by stabilizing the onsite power supply.

This project builds on Korra Energi’s experience in executing integrated energy solutions, including the execution of a 3.5 MW Flare Gas Recovery (FGR) system at Eshpetco (Oil & Gas) site, producing LPG, condensates, and on-site power, in addition to a 1.4 MWp hybrid Solar PV plant integrated with the existing FGR system—forming Egypt’s first Zero Flare Gas Hybrid Project with a total capacity of 4.9 MW.

Engineered for Harsh Oil Field Conditions

The project uses nine units of Sungrow SG150CX string inverters to support onsite power generation under the operating conditions of a desert oil and gas facility, where high temperatures, dust exposure, and fluctuating load profiles are common constraints for electrical systems.

The system's multi-MPPT design allows energy capture to be optimized under variable solar irradiance, supporting a more stable onsite electricity supply for continuous industrial operations, particularly in environments traditionally dependent on diesel generators.

An integrated digital monitoring system, combining inverter-level data logging with meteorological inputs, enables continuous performance visibility. This supports condition-based maintenance strategies, which are increasingly used in oil and gas power systems to improve uptime and reduce unplanned maintenance interventions.
