The Doñana Project is a strategic initiative designed to reduce energy dependence in modern agriculture while maintaining productivity and economic competitiveness. It focuses on decarbonizing strawberry production in the environmentally sensitive Doñana region through an innovative off-grid energy solution.
The project combines photovoltaic solar power, battery energy storage, and a backup diesel generator to ensure a reliable and continuous power supply. A key objective is to replace variable fuel costs with more predictable energy costs while significantly reducing diesel consumption. The system has already achieved an approximately 90% reduction in diesel use, lowering both operating costs and environmental impact. One of the main challenges was accurately assessing the farm's energy requirements and designing a customized solution. The installation includes a 224 kWp solar array, battery storage systems, and a 300 kVA backup generator. An advanced energy management system controls when batteries and generators operate to maximize efficiency. Continuous monitoring and intelligent alarms support preventive maintenance and system optimization. Overall, the project demonstrates how renewable energy can improve sustainability, reduce carbon emissions, and support agricultural operations in remote locations.
