Björnberget is Enlight Renewable Energy’s largest wind farm, with 60 turbines and a generation capacity of 372 MW. Adding 100 MWh of Sungrow battery storage brings greater flexibility to the existing wind development. For Enlight, the value of storage extends beyond managing electricity production. It provides greater control over when energy is delivered, supports the project’s commercial operation and enables the provision of grid services.

A 100 MWh Sungrow battery energy storage system has been added to the operating wind farm. Integrating storage into an existing asset required a solution suited to the site’s infrastructure, grid requirements and installation approach. Working together, Enlight and Sungrow developed a tailored approach to this brownfield project. Sungrow’s understanding of local requirements helped the partners coordinate the storage integration with the needs of the operating wind farm. Given Björnberget’s remote location and harsh conditions, equipment quality and durability were central to the selection. Enlight prioritised robust technology that it could trust throughout a long operating life, supported by a partner with experience across different markets and equipment types.

With the addition of battery storage, Björnberget now combines wind generation and energy storage in one hybrid project. The system gives the operator greater flexibility to manage when electricity is delivered and how the asset responds to production and market conditions. Beyond the site itself, the storage installation supports the provision of grid services. The project demonstrates how an existing wind farm can be developed to meet growing demand for flexible renewable energy.
