The Background

ENGIE's 638 MWh BESS Coya project in Chile is set to become Latin America's largest energy storage facility and a global benchmark for DC-coupled solar-plus-storage. The Challenges
Challenge 1: Complex Systems That Had to Work Together
As Latin America’s largest DC-coupled solar-plus-storage project, it involved serious complexity. The 638 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) had to integrate with an existing 181 MW PV plant, demanding precise component matching and sophisticated coordination. Sungrow's PowerTitan addressed this with its prefabricated, modular design. All core components—the inverter, battery, transformer, and RMU—are housed in a single 40-foot container, which massively simplified both system integration and on-site construction.
Challenge 2: Cooling in an Unforgiving Environment
The Atacama Desert can see temperatures swing up to 80°C in a day. This is not ideal for electronic equipment, but Sungrow's PowerTitan was built for it. Its smart liquid-cooling technology controls temperatures within a precise ±2.5°C margin, addressing the intense thermal stress. Additionally, its inverter and battery containers are rigorously tested to withstand extreme conditions, ensuring the system runs reliably in one of the driest places on Earth.

The Solution

SG6250HV-MV Features a unique integrated design for rapid deployment and unified maintenance, simplifying both setup and long-term service. ST2752UX Efficient liquid cooling improves heat dissipation, extending battery life while increasing system discharge capacity.

The Impacts

When fully operational, BESS Coya will stabilize power for almost 200,000 households in Chile's Antofagasta region. It represents a new benchmark for large-scale solar-plus-storage projects. The facility helps stabilize the grid by providing energy during periods of peak demand. Overall, the project is expected to cut backup diesel usage by 260,000 tons annually, improve grid stability, and bring Chile one step closer to its sustainability goals.
