A Partnership Built on Trust

In the village of Stary Grodków in the Opole region, one of Poland’s largest battery energy storage systems has taken shape. The project, with a grid connection capacity of 50 MW, was delivered by EDF Power Solutions Polska with technological support from Sungrow. It is a direct response to the growing need for flexibility and grid balancing within the Polish power system.

The scope of the investment encompassed the design and installation of the energy storage units, the construction of the GPO Stary Grodków substation, and a cable line connecting the facility to the 110 kV grid. Through the dedication and commitment of the Sungrow project team, the client’s expectations were not only met but exceeded - laying an excellent foundation for continued cooperation.

Technology at the Heart of the Project

At the core of the installation are 24 Sungrow ST5015UX units - utility-class containerised energy storage systems - paired with 12 MVS5140 medium-voltage stations. This is a premium-tier technological solution, engineered for demanding grid applications: rapid frequency response, active participation in energy markets, and ensuring supply stability for the grid operator.

Benefits for the Grid and Energy Market

The energy storage facility in Stary Grodków plays a key role in balancing the power grid. With the ability to charge and discharge energy almost instantaneously, the installation actively participates in frequency regulation and supports voltage stabilisation at the local 110 kV grid node. This delivers direct benefits both for the grid operator and for the energy market as a whole.

Sungrow: A Global Leader, Closer Than Ever

Sungrow is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of photovoltaic inverters and energy storage systems - with a globally installed base of 870 GW of power electronics converters (as of mid-2025) and recognition by BloombergNEF as the most ‘bankable’ manufacturer in its category. In Wood Mackenzie rankings for 2024 and 2025, the company holds second place globally.

In Europe, Sungrow’s references include the continent’s largest BESS project in Belgium (800 MWh) and the Bramley ESS installation in the United Kingdom (330 MWh). Poland is a strategic market for the company - as evidenced by the decision to open its first European manufacturing facility in Silesia: a €230 million investment, targeting 400 employees and an annual production capacity of 20 GW of inverters and 12.5 GWh of BESS systems.

A Synergy of Partners

The Stary Grodków project is a model example of a collaborative ecosystem: a project developer, a global technology supplier with a proven portfolio, an experienced EPC contractor, and a specialised energy management systems partner. Each participant contributed competencies that together produced an installation ready to operate within the demanding environment of the Polish electricity market.

For Sungrow, this project reinforces its position as the preferred supplier for major energy players in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe.

Poland’s energy transition is gaining momentum. Projects such as Stary Grodków demonstrate that technology, capital, and strong collaboration can genuinely accelerate it.
