Arctic-Ready Solutions: 70 MW PV Project in Northernmost Finland

Capacity:

70 MW

COD Time:

2025

The Background

Located in Simo, Lapland, this project represents the northernmost D-type power plant of its kind, marking a milestone in large-scale PV deployment in cold climates. Developed by Solarigo with Sungrow technology supplied through PVO International, the project features 180 SG350HX inverters and approximately 120,000 solar panels. The goal was to deliver reliable solar power in one of Europe’s most challenging environments.

The Challenges

Harsh arctic weather presented major challenges during construction. Extreme cold, heavy rainfall, and icing threatened the reliability of hardware and installation schedules. Maintaining equipment performance and safety in freezing conditions required technology that was both highly durable and resilient.

At the Edge of The Arctic

The Solution

Sungrow's SG350HX inverter proved ideal for arctic conditions. With IP66-rated protection, wide input voltage range, and modular design, the inverters remained operational in sub-zero temperatures. Their installation beneath the PV structure helped shield them from the harshest elements, supporting both reliability and maintainability.

The Impacts

This landmark project showcases the feasibility of solar energy even in extreme latitudes. It proves that Sungrow’s inverter technology can unlock clean energy potential in the Arctic, expanding the boundaries of where large-scale PV is viable. It’s a leap forward in making renewable energy a truly global solution.

At the Edge of The Arctic

We chose the Sungrow 350 inverter mainly because weve had good experiences with it in previous park projects. When the updated, larger version came out, we thought wed introduce it here. Whats good about Sungrow, from our perspective, is that the equipment has proven reliable, and they also offer favorable warranty terms for us.
Jere Graf Project Manager, Solarigo
The modular system improves the reliability and maintainability of the power plant. Additionally, the inverters meet strict local system technical requirements. The wide input voltage range and numerous connection options allow for flexible configurations in different conditions.
