870 MW

The Background

As part of its 2030 National Vision, Qatar has targeted 5 GW of installed solar capacity to advance its decarbonization goals. This 870 MW utility-scale PV project is the second major plant after the 800 MW Al Kharsaa installation. It represents a bold expansion for a country historically reliant on fossil fuels, and is expected to drive the country’s renewable energy transition while serving its industrial zones in Mesaieed and Ras Laffan.

The Challenges

Developing solar infrastructure in the Middle East is no stroll in the park. Qatar’s extreme conditions—temperatures of up to 52 °C, airborne salinity, and desert storms—pose serious risks to conventional equipment. The project also underwent one of the region’s most rigorous Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), with strict standards from local clients for safety, durability, and custom specifications.

The Solution

Sungrow provided a comprehensive solution built specifically for the Qatari desert. The project deployed 2,760 units of the SG320HX, a high-performance 1500V string inverter designed for high-temperature operation. These were paired with 92 sets of MVS8850-LV medium voltage stations, each customized to meet the project’s unique requirements. All equipment came with IP66/C5 ratings—critical safeguards for long-term reliability in harsh environments like the desert. Most importantly, the project was delivered on time and successfully completed.

The Impacts

By offering a system specifically designed to excel, perform, and endure in this environment, Sungrow played a key role in ensuring the project’s success. It demonstrated not only our team’s engineering excellence but also our team’s readiness to propose and lead complex deployments should the project require it. The successful deployment of this project represents not just Qatar’s ambition to be part of the global renewable movement, but also Sungrow’s drive to enable broad participation in it.
