BESS del Desierto Client Atlas Renewable Energy

Offtaker:

Copec-Emoac

PPA Duration:

15 years

2025. 04. 24

Capacity (Plant Perspective):

200 MW/800 MWh

Capacity (Sungrow Perspective):

880 MWh DC

The Background

Chile is home to the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth. And while the lack of rainfall makes this an ideal place to harness solar energy, logistics and transportation become a massive hurdle. The country’s main load centers are located nearly 950 miles away. It’s no wonder that Chile reportedly loses around 14,000 GWh of solar energy each year.

The Challenges
Harsh Desert Environment
The BESS del Desierto project is located in a harsh environment, requiring robust protection against sand, dust, and corrosion, as well as a design that ensures long-term stability and effective cooling.
Unstable & Complex Grid
The project had to manage the volatility of Chile’s long and complex electrical grid, requiring a solution that could both strengthen the local network and ensure a stable power supply.
Need for Rapid Deployment
The project needed to be deployed rapidly to capitalize on a short window for high returns.

The Solution
PowerTitan for the Environment
To combat the harsh desert environment, Sungrow deployed its PowerTitan ESS. The system features C5-grade anti-corrosion, IP54 protection against sand and dust, an intelligent liquid cooling system, and a smart O&M platform to ensure long-term stability and optimal cooling.
Advanced Grid Support Technology
Sungrow leveraged advanced grid support technology—featuring near-instant response times, frequency regulation, and voltage regulation—to strengthen the local grid and manage its volatility.
PowerTitan Pre-Assembly for Rapid Deployment
Sungrow utilized the PowerTitan’s pre-assembled and factory-tested design. This approach, combined with dedicated on-the-ground project management and local service warehouses, significantly shortened the deployment timeline.

The Impacts

The commissioning of BESS del Desierto marks the next step in Chile’s transition to clean energy. The project will feed approximately 280 GWh of clean electricity into the grid each year. Additionally, under a 15-year PPA with Copec-EMOAC, the stored energy will power over 2,500 electric buses across 27 electroterminals, significantly advancing Chile’s clean transportation goals.

BESS del Desierto is Atlass first energy storage station and a key milestone in our entry into the sector, marking a strategic step to harness solar resources and enhance energy reliability in Latin America. We are excited to achieve this with our long-standing partner, Sungrow.
