Chile is home to the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth. And while the lack of rainfall makes this an ideal place to harness solar energy, logistics and transportation become a massive hurdle. The country’s main load centers are located nearly 950 miles away. It’s no wonder that Chile reportedly loses around 14,000 GWh of solar energy each year.
The commissioning of BESS del Desierto marks the next step in Chile’s transition to clean energy. The project will feed approximately 280 GWh of clean electricity into the grid each year. Additionally, under a 15-year PPA with Copec-EMOAC, the stored energy will power over 2,500 electric buses across 27 electroterminals, significantly advancing Chile’s clean transportation goals.
