The Metzlesdorf solar project in Germany represents a strong example of how aging PV assets can be revitalized with modern inverter technology. Originally built in 2012 with over 30,000 IBC PolySol 235DS modules, the 8 MW plant has supplied clean energy for more than a decade. Commissioned with Münch Energie as the plant owner, the site generates approximately 24 GWh of renewable electricity annually, contributing significantly to regional electricity demands. Until today, the plant continues to operate smoothly and without any issues.
After more than 20 years of operation, the plant faced severe performance losses due to Potential Induced Degradation (PID). Module attenuation reached 23%, reducing overall efficiency and threatening the site’s long-term profitability. Additionally, the existing system design limited operational flexibility, making it difficult to maximize output and adapt to evolving technical standards.
To address these challenges, the outdated inverters on-site were replaced with Sungrow’s SG125CX-P2 solution. Featuring 12 MPPTs, the new inverter design introduced a more flexible plant configuration and optimized string performance. A key differentiator was the built-in PID recovery function, which actively counteracts degradation effects. Within just five months of operation, the system recorded a 6% increase in energy generation, demonstrating the tangible benefits of the upgrade.
The Metzlesdorf project highlights how revamping strategies with advanced inverter technology can breathe new life into aging PV plants. By integrating the SG125CX-P2, the operator not only restored lost capacity but also secured long-term efficiency gains. With proven reliability and improved flexibility, the site now continues to deliver stable renewable energy to the grid—serving as a benchmark for PV plant modernization across Europe.
